AI Engineering Manager

Our client is seeking an experienced AI Engineering Manager to lead the people, technical roadmap, and engineering standards of its growing AI team in Canada.
This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for translating business priorities into a practical AI strategy across AI-powered rating solutions, conversational AI, internal productivity tools, and agent-assistance technologies.
The successful candidate will combine strong technical credibility with people leadership, product delivery, stakeholder management, and experience deploying reliable AI and LLM solutions within a production SaaS environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of AI Engineers and Senior AI Engineers
  • Own the AI engineering roadmap and align technical priorities with business objectives
  • Translate business requirements into clear, achievable engineering plans
  • Guide the development and delivery of AI and LLM-powered products from concept through production
  • Establish engineering standards for prompting, evaluation, testing, monitoring, and AI guardrails
  • Review technical architecture and help resolve complex engineering challenges
  • Remain technically involved and maintain hands-on credibility with the engineering team
  • Partner with Product, Compliance, Legal, Sales, and other business stakeholders
  • Develop responsible AI governance practices suitable for a regulated environment
  • Evaluate LLM providers, AI vendors, infrastructure options, and cost-performance trade-offs
  • Lead build-versus-buy assessments for AI technologies and platforms
  • Establish reliable LLMOps and MLOps practices across the SaaS platform
  • Communicate AI strategy, risks, progress, and results to senior leadership
  • Support hiring, onboarding, performance management, and long-term team development

Required qualifications

  • 8+ years of software engineering or related technical experience
  • 3+ years of experience in a technical lead, engineering manager, or comparable leadership role
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams that delivered AI or LLM-powered products end-to-end
  • Strong understanding of generative AI, LLM architecture, prompting, evaluation, and guardrails
  • Experience establishing technical standards and reviewing software or AI architecture
  • Experience owning a technical roadmap and translating business goals into engineering plans
  • Proven people-management experience, including hiring, mentoring, coaching, and performance management
  • Strong understanding of LLMOps, MLOps, production deployment, monitoring, reliability, and scalability
  • Experience evaluating LLM providers, vendors, and cost-performance trade-offs
  • Experience collaborating with Product, Compliance, Legal, Sales, and senior leadership
  • Ability to communicate technical strategy, risks, and results to non-technical stakeholders
  • Hands-on experience with modern AI-assisted engineering and development tools
  • Strong leadership, stakeholder-management, and project-delivery skills
  • Eligible to work in Canada

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience delivering AI solutions within insurance, financial services, fintech, or another regulated industry
  • Experience with conversational AI, agent copilots, lead qualification, or automated rating solutions
  • Experience building and scaling AI capabilities within a SaaS platform
  • Knowledge of responsible AI, privacy, security, compliance, and model-risk management
  • Experience with retrieval-augmented generation, LLM evaluation frameworks, and production monitoring
  • Technical experience with Python, cloud platforms, APIs, data pipelines, and AI infrastructure
  • Experience building or expanding an AI engineering team
  • Experience working in a growing international or distributed organization

Compensation and benefits

  • Base salary range: US$140,000 to US$160,000 per year.
  • Final compensation will be determined based on the successful candidate’s experience, technical expertise, leadership background, and overall suitability for the position.
